Text Box: Position and Movement Window

In addition to the text navigation information described above, the Position and Movement Window provides a graphic depiction of the boat direction and the wind and currents acting on the boat. The black arrow shows the vector wind direction, that is the arrow is pointing in the direction the wind is blowing toward unlike the windex depiction which has the arrow pointing into the wind. The green arrow shows the vector direction of the current, that is the arrow points in the direction toward which the current is flowing. The red arrow shows the true vector direction of the boat which is a combination of the forward movement and the sideslip motion of the boat due to the wind and current. In this depiction North is at the top of the circle and tick marks are at 10 degree increments.

The waypoint is shown by the green circle. Note that the bearing and range to the waypoint are given along with velocity made good (VMG) to the waypoint.

4. Charting and Navigation

This version of Virtual Passage is proud to include Force9 a full function charting and navigation system developed and distributed by ATM-International LLC. With Force9 actual nautical charts in a variety of formats can be used as a background for carrying out your Virtual Passage voyage. Additionally, you can use Force9 as a surrogate for having a GPS driven navigation system adding realism to the voyage. The following describes instructions for using Force9 with Virtual Passage. Virtual Passage can be used stand-alone without using the Force9 charting. It is recommended (to avoid information overload) that new users run Virtual Passage several times using the base charts included without employing Force9. After this experience you can use Force9 and all of the interesting world of nautical charting to add richness and realism to your virtual voyages.

Force9 has its own set of help files to explain its many functions. These can be consulted to do special tasks such as creating and accessing waypoint files, recording and playing log files etc. However, interaction
