Screen 2. The Voyage

This sets the characteristics of the voyage. If a previous voyage has been saved then a restart can be selected. Otherwise, select a “New Voyage”.

A choice of units is allowed – English or Metric. In English units the speed of the boat, wind and currents are in nautical miles per hour. Distance is in nautical miles. Temperatures are in Farenheit. In metric all speeds are in kilometers per hour and distance is in kilometers. Temperature is in Celsius.

Option Choices
For the first run you may want to select the default options. There are three options listed in Version 1.0. The first is a choice for a Simple Base Map. Selecting this option gives a black and white map with no depth contours. This map is slightly faster for zooms than the standard map when the High Resolution Depths option (see below) is not selected. However, if the high resolution depths option is selected then the simple base map is considerably faster on zooms, but, you lose the water depth contours and the color.

The second choice is Plot Previous Track. This option allows the user to plot a previous voyage for comparison with the present voyage. The previous track is plotted in yellow and the current track in red. In the future this option will also allow the user to download other user’s voyages, historic voyages or previous races.

The third choice is for Wind Gusts. The wind data used in this system are grid averaged values. These grid averaged values represent the large scale weather systems such as extra-tropical cyclones, fronts, high pressure systems etc. They do not represent wind variations associated with thunderstorms, sea breezes or turbulent gusts. This option adds a quasi-random fluctuating component to the wind speed.

The fourth choice is a High Resolution Depth option. With this option, ocean depth data are provided at half degree resolution rather than the standard one degree resolution. If you use charting in Force9
